home sweet home

since we’ve lived in this house, some of the things that have happened to us include (but are not limited to):

  • garden wall demolished by local teenagers while we went out for a meal one night
  • garden fence slowly and systematically destroyed
  • garden gate stolen and used for firewood
  • my mum’s car jumped on by a gang of teenagers, leaving a huge crater in the roof
  • my mum’s car pushed diagonally across the road, meaning the police had to knock us awake at 3am (and that’s not scary or unpleasant at all)
  • human faeces left in our porch
  • our central heating system broken from outside, meaning we had to spend one january weekend without heat
  • a brick thrown through our living-room window (two days after my grandma’s funeral. thanks)

with all that in mind (and there’s more, too- them’s just the high lowlights) i’m sure you’ll understand the amount of excitement we’re feeling to be…

ten years

august 2007

ten years ago today, i was heading to school in my friend lynsey’s car, ready to pick up my a-level results.

i was babbling with nervousness having slept really badly, and just wanted to get the whole thing over with.

of course, when we got there we had to queue, and make small talk with friends and acquaintances, and try to avoid the eyes of those people who’d clearly been crying for about an hour… and then finally! a geography teacher i didn’t know asked me my name, and i told her, and she rooted through the ’s’ section and handed me a tiny thin slip of paper with a big smile.

that had to be a good sign, right?
